Lockie says:
“Stargazer is a song I wrote as a love letter to one of my dearest friends and most cherished and favourite people in the world, Phoebe Waller-Bridge. She was one of the first friends I made when I moved to London in 2006 and we were flatmates together above a shop in North London. It was a great time; right at the very beginning of The Overtones for me when I was still working two other jobs, we were both as broke as a church mouse but we had big dreams, big hearts and big laughs.
To watch Phoebe find her way so deeply into so many people’s hearts all over the world - with her staggering series Fleabag, as the creator of the gangbusters Killing Eve and so much more (I popped up as a nutbag Aussie in her first series, Crashing!) - fills my heart with pride and joy to bursting point. I well up sometimes just thinking of her.
During the first lockdown of summer 2020, I found myself looking up at what appeared to be brighter and clearer-than-normal skies full of stars, which you don’t usually get to see in London. Feeling the press and drag of lockdown and being separated from friends and loved ones, I found it helpful to remind myself of who and what I was grateful for in my life, who inspired and encouraged me. Gazing up at the stars I thought of my friend Phoebe and everything she means to me and the song wrote itself.
I painted this original work to be the back cover of my EP (also titled Stargazer) and to let everyone know about it I organised a competition giveaway whereby I would paint the winners’ names as stars, in stars up there with all the other stars! And it all went down so well with everyone. People from all over the world were getting in touch letting me know whose names they would have me paint in the stars for them: mums, dads, kids, fiancé’s, friends and loved ones now passed away.
Seeing how much the idea of loved one’s name painted into the stars touched people, it didn’t feel right to only let three competition winners have these totally unique original artworks.
SO. I will be painting a name (or two if you ask nicely! But I do find one or two names looks best) into every single print sold. It’s a special painting to me, the little Wee Soul (who is in all my paintings) sitting up there alone on a ledge way, way, way up there with the moon and stars, I find it really restful, peaceful and comforting somehow. And look, there’s a ladder!
Your Stargazer print will be individually painted by me and tailored for you and the personal memory you would like to capture. It’s a great pleasure to be able to provide this special memory for you.
In the past I have only sold my prints in A4 size. But when I paint the originals, I do it in the larger, prouder and bolder A3. For the first time I am making prints in both A4 and A3 - this way you can have the print in the same size on your wall at home as I have on mine with the original.”
